Tales, Technology, and Transformations: How Different Media Environments Shape the Structure, Style, and Content of Folk Narratives

Tales, Technology, and Transformations: How Different Media Environments Shape the Structure, Style, and Content of Folk Narratives
By:
Published on 2008 by ProQuest

Under the impetus of mass mediation, folk narratives are in the process of developing into new forms that defy long-held oral/print and folklore/popular culture categories. This type of change, however, is not new to the field of folklore. In the past, writing and print modified oral folk narratives, just as today electronic and digital media are transforming written and printed folk narratives. This raises two related questions: how does the projection of a narrative through a particular medium affect the structure, style, and content of the narrative and how does the transfer of a folk narrative from one medium to another affect the folk narrative's status as a folkloric item? To answer these questions, this dissertation examines: (1) the purpose of narratives in general and folk narratives in particular; (2) the impact that past communication technologies have had on narratives and how those changes affected the form and content of folk narratives, and; (3) the impact that electronic and digital media is having on narratives in general, folk narratives in particular, and what this means for contemporary folk narrative studies. The dissertation concludes by exploring the significant role that folklorists can play in applying the analytic tools of folkloristics to what can be referred to as \

On Trails

On Trails
By:"Robert Moor"
Published on 2016-07-12 by Simon and Schuster

“The best outdoors book of the year” —Sierra Club “Stunning…A wondrous nonfiction debut” —Departures “Moor’s book is enchanting” —The Boston Globe “A wanderer’s dream” —The Economist From a brilliant new literary voice comes a groundbreaking exploration of how trails help us understand the world—from tiny ant trails to hiking paths that span continents, from interstate highways to the Internet. In 2009, while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Robert Moor began to wonder about the paths that lie beneath our feet: How do they form? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of the next seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. He learned the tricks of master trail-builders, hunted down long-lost Cherokee trails, and traced the origins of our road networks and the Internet. In each chapter, Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing—combining the nomadic joys of Peter Matthiessen with the eclectic wisdom of Lewis Hyde’s The Gift. Throughout, Moor reveals how this single topic—the oft-overlooked trail—sheds new light on a wealth of age-old questions: How does order emerge out of chaos? How did animals first crawl forth from the seas and spread across continents? How has humanity’s relationship with nature and technology shaped world around us? And, ultimately, how does each of us pick a path through life? Moor has the essayist’s gift for making new connections, the adventurer’s love for paths untaken, and the philosopher’s knack for asking big questions. With a breathtaking arc that spans from the dawn of animal life to the digital era, On Trails is a book that makes us see our world, our history, our species, and our ways of life anew.

Published on 2009-08-26 by iUniverse

Latitude 18 is a novel about Greg Star and Mark Barrett, two childhood friends in their mid-twenties who were fed up with their routine lives in Baltimore. What began as a desperately needed vacation in the islands of the Caribbean soon set the stage for a totally life-changing experience for the two young adventurers. The Caribbean has always been dominated by patriarchal figures, those men who unofficially run their small communities in their own style. Greg and Mark unwittingly find themselves entangled with one such individual, Arsène Louis Fleming; who was always loyal to his friends, but merciless to his foes. The young men quickly realize that they are no match for the old-timer that everyone in the region refers to as “Sun;” that is, until they all discover there is a much stronger force to reckon with in the islands of the Caribbean—Mother Nature. As you follow the adventures of Mark and Greg, prepare yourself for the twists and turns that thrilling, emotional journeys often bring. Love affairs, betrayal, jealousy, and the mighty bond of friendship, which is truly tested to the breaking point, are all features of this exciting adventure.
